Tapping a lid does nothing
Hold the top of your iPhone against the lid. Finn's Tins needs an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later. If nothing happens, open the app, go to My lids and choose Scan a lid, then hold your iPhone near the lid.
A lid says “Needs setting up”
The person who set that lid up has reset it, perhaps to give it away. Tap it to set it up again: give it a name and choose how long an opened tin keeps.
I can't mark a new tin
Marking a tin needs an iCloud account. Open Settings on your iPhone and sign in to iCloud. You can still see dates without one.
With no signal, the app keeps your change on your phone and says “Saved on this phone. It will sync when you're back online.”
I'm not getting reminders
Open Settings on your iPhone, choose Notifications, then Finn's Tins, and allow notifications. Reminders go to the phone that last marked the tin as opened. To get them on another phone too, open the lid there, tap Lid settings and switch on Remind me too.
I'm giving a lid away
Open the lid, tap Lid settings, then Reset lid. This clears its name and history on every phone, ready for the next owner. Only the person who first set the lid up can do this. Remove from My lids only takes it off your own phone.
Does it work on Android?
Not yet. Finn's Tins is for iPhone only for now.
Can Finn's Tins tell me whether food is safe?
No. It records when a tin was opened and reminds you when it's getting old. It can't tell whether food is safe to eat: always check your food's label.
How do I delete my information?
Reset the lid, as above, or email us. Read the privacy policy for the details.
